In Madrid, in October 2019, during the first Iberian Bamboo Symposium, a large group of bamboo enthusiasts from Spain and Portugal all met together for the first time. From this event, the idea arose to create the Iberian Bamboo Association, which is officially presented to the world in 2021
Although bamboo does not grow indigenously in Europe, it is the continent with the highest consumption of products made with bamboo. It is still not used as much as in other cultures, but little by little it is gaining ground, and multiple investigations indicate that it is the most sustainable material on the planet, thanks to its rapid growth (up to one meter per day), and its enormous capacity to carbon sequestration, superior to any other plant species.
For this reason, this group of people from Spain and Portugal decided to create the AsIB, with the intention of connecting all those interested in promoting the use of bamboo, especially in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal), and favoring its dissemination in all its aspects, helping to create synergies and joint plans, whose impact will always be greater than at the individual level.
This non-profit organization aims to promote the use of bamboo as a high-performance material with an excellent ecological balance in the European market. As a partnership, it is intended to unify all efforts to promote the research and introduction of bamboo in sectors such as agriculture, architecture, construction or engineering, as the sensible and sustainable alternative to finite and polluting materials. In this way, it is also intended to promote technical training and public awareness, which will mitigate the impact of the existing stigma on this material.
Mission and values
Our mission is to promote the use of bamboo and spread its knowledge especially in Europe.
In the achievement of our objectives and within the scope of our positioning in the Iberian Peninsula, from the AsIB, we guide all our actions by the following basic principles:
Social and environmental sustainability: That development and well-being occur in balance with respect and protection of the cultural, social and natural environment. That development must be supportive and sustainable.
Independence: Institutional and decision-making autonomy with respect to any governmental, intergovernmental or any other body outside the institution.
Transparency and open culture: We base our work on honesty, mutual responsibility and maximum access to information as pillars of social and economic accountability.
Professionalism: We believe in enthusiasm and effort but accompanied by preparation and training as mechanisms to carry out our work in the best possible way.
Gender equality: We believe in equal rights between women and men before the law and for justice (equal opportunities) in access and control of resources, as well as in decision-making in the public and private spheres
